wrt: the claim Tesla is safer. Tesla autopilot is not suitable for high density traffic with a mix of pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars, complex intersections and unpredictable traffic movements. This type of traffic zone has more accidents/mile than the freeway/highway driving autopilot is used in.

“In the 1st quarter, we registered one accident for every 2.87 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot, we registered one accident for every 1.76 million miles driven. By comparison, NHTSA’s most recent data shows that in the United States there is an automobile crash every 436,000 miles.”

The data scientist in me is keen to look at these stats in more detail, links, suggestions for sources welcome.

There is room for healthy scepticism on future permits for fully autonomous cars. That threshold might be 5,10,20 years away. Much of the stockmarket debate on Tesla is geared around valuing how soon they will achieve full autonomous certification and how cost effective their manufacturing will be. either way, not a stock to be ignored.
